EDCOUCH - Maria Teresa Lara, 89, departed this world for heaven on November 27, 2016, with family by her side.
Born November 21, 1927 in Guadalajara, Mexico, Teresa was the daughter of the late Jose Godinez and Maria de Jesus Hernandez. She married Victoriano Lara on January 6, 1944 and was a dedicated homemaker and a lifelong resident of Edcouch, Texas.
Teresa’s interests included gardening, cooking, finding bargains at the market, and above all a sincere devotion to God. She dedicated much of her time and energy in life as a caregiver to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She embraced her ability to serve her community as a traditional sobadora and graciously gave of herself so that others could find healing, both physically and spiritually .
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years, Victoriano, her son-in law, Daniel O. Martinez, her son, Jose Luis Lara, and her daughter-in-law, Magdalena Lara.
She is survived by 8 children and their spouses: Angelina Perez, Amado (Elena*) Lara, Jesus (Apolinar) Lara, Flor Estela (Daniel*) Martinez, James (Norma) Lara, Norma (Silvestre) Ortiz, Maria Elena (Robert) Short, and Linda (Wayne) Rodrigues. Also surviving are twenty-two grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Viewing will continue Thursday, December 1, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Theresita Catholic Church in Edcouch. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
